Why Ka-Rhonda does this work...

As a seasoned educator, I was drawn to THEI and this work in the HEP field because of the emphasis on teaching and learning. It has given my life great joy and purpose to witness and facilitate our extraordinary students excel and matriculate despite the adversity and challenges of being an incarcerated college student. I know from experience that higher education can be a lever for success that once obtained, can never be taken away from the individual. It is my belief that education is power and freedom! Access to higher education is both transformational and generational curse breaking for many families. Not only are our students learning and growing through the THEI educational experience, their families and loved ones are also reaping the benefits of the new exposure to lessons learned within the classroom walls.

Ka-Rhonda Porter joined THEI in 2019 as the Program Coordinator. She works closely with our partner prisons and our partner colleges to facilitate the operation and administration of the THEI college programs. Ka-Rhonda brings to the position a lifelong dedication to the field of education through attending the University of Houston for doctoral level education within the field of Curriculum & Instruction – focused on minority's higher education experiences. She also earned her Master's Degree in Education from Texas Southern University and a Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education. Ka-Rhonda brings to THEI 16 years of teaching and research in secondary education in urban areas.
